John Cowper Granbery Family Papers 1839-1952 1839-1952.

Primarily family correspondence associated with Bishop Granbery and his family. The correspondence concerns daily activities: health, careers, travels, other family members, theology, politics, financial matters, college life, etc. Other topics include: Civil War and Reconstruction, World War I and II, International YMCA, 1914 - 1923 travels in Europe, Methodism in Brazil, Methodist Conferences, and Southwestern University. Also found are postcards (many foreign) from circa 1915 - 1920s, publications, passports, documents, photographs, clippings, and genealogical materials for Granbery and Blackburn families, including an extensive family tree. Granbery Jr. was fired multiple times for his outspokenness and the controversy is reflected in his papers.

John C. Granbery senior (1829-1907) was a Methodist Bishop in Virginia who also helped establish a Methodist presence in Brazil in 1886. His descendants continued to work for the Methodist Church in Brazil into the 20th century and their correspondence is present, including that of his son-in-law the Reverend Dr. Hugh Clarence Tucker.
